Comments: For 104 years, since the opening of the Muscat Post Office in 1864, it had remained the only post office in the country. This changed at some point of time in 1968 with the opening of a post office in Salalah.<br /> <br /> The exact date that the post office was opened is not known and this website uses the date of the earliest record of mail it has that has been cancelled with a Salalah date-stamp.<br /> <br /> The first post office in Salalah was located at the premises of the RAF post office in Salalah and mail travelling out of Salalah was carried by the RAF services transiting Salalah.<br /> <br /> <strong>The RAF Postal Route</strong><br /> <br /> During the 1960s, Salalah provided refueling and replenishment facilities for aircraft operating on the Aden - Masirah - Sharjah - Bahrain route.&nbsp;The airfield at Salalah was constructed in 1928 and has been in constant use since then.<br /> <br /> Salalah had been the residence of the Sultan, Said bin Taimur, since 1958, the same time that he sold Gwadar to Pakistan. In 1962, The Dhofar rebellion was launched with the support of Saudi Arabia &ndash; a few years earlier Oman and Saudi Arabia had clashed over the ownership of the Buraimi Oasis.&nbsp;<br /> <br /> 1962 saw some attacks on the RAF base and the oil industry in Dhofar. After an assassination attempt in 1966 leading the Sultan to retire to his palace never to be seen in public again.
