Opening of Satellite Earth Station - 1969
A commemorative set of 4 stamps issued on the occasion of the opening of the Satellite Earth Station at Ras Abu Jarjur. The values issued were: 20 Fils, 40 Fils, 100 Fils and 150 Fils.
The following is the introduction to the set of stamps as it was presented in the leaflet sent to the customers of the Philatelic Bureau:
His Highness Sheikh Isa bin Salman al-Khalifa, Ruler of Bahrain and its Dependencies; will officially open the Cable & Wireless Ltd. Satellite Earth Station at Ras Abu Jarjur, Bahrain, on the 14th July, 1969. Four stamps will be issued to commemorate this important event in Bahrain’s modern history.
The earth station, which has cost GBP 2.1 million, is designed to operate through the Intelsat III Indian Ocean satellite and it will be capable of relaying telephone conversations and messages to points as far west as the United Kingdom and as far east as Japan. Some idea of Intelsat III’s range can be had from the fact that one satellite can serve an area of about one third of the globe. The Earth Station itself has a 90 ft. diameter fully steerable antenna supported on a 60 ft. high tower as depicted on the stamps.
Bahrain is the first state in the Middle East and Africa to have an operational earth station. The project was first conceived in June 1966 at a time when communication satellites were still something of a novelty. Cable & Wireless Ltd., who operates local and international telecommunications in Bahrain and other Gulf states, decided to construct an earth station to serve the Arabian Gulf area. The aim was to place the Gulf in the center of the most dynamic communications revolution since the development over the past fifty years of radio, and, more recently, undersea telephone cables.
The Bahrain earth station, together with tropospheric scatter systems elsewhere in the Gulf, form part of an integrated plan to provide the states of the Arabian Gulf with an ultra-modern system which would give them high-quality links with each other and with every part of the world.
Facilities have been built into the Bahrain station for further expansion should a second dish aerial be required. It could be installed without disturbing the operation of the present system. The station also has the capacity of transmitting and receiving intercontinental television.
It might, at first, seem premature to be looking forward so soon after this great advance, but in the ever-expanding world of telecommunications, it is always safest to assume that tomorrow will come today.

The 25 Fils Surcharge on 15 Fils Provisional Issue - 1969
With the 1969 Christmas season approaching heavy demand for stamps of the 25 Fils airmail rate for greeting cards to Europe, India, Pakistan and the Arab Countries required an emergency surcharge “25” on the 15 Fils 1967 definitive stamp. The revaluing was done by means of a hand numbering machine set to repeat and was executed with surprising accuracy.
Due to the nature of the overprinting errors and varieties are found. The most prominent and also very rare error is the “Double Value” error. Varieties such as broken figures and light or weary impression are more common.
The provisional was place on sale on the 13th of December 1969 and all 20.000 copies were sold at post office counters by Christmas Eve. The majority of the stamps were either used singly on greeting cards or lost to philatelist. The stamp was never put on sale at the Crown Agents.
